Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite provides enterprise-class tools, performance, & scalability for a highly productive HPC environment. The Suite provides a complete & integrated cluster environment including the OS, HPC Job Scheduler, Message Passing Interface v2 (MPI2) and Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) interactive application support, cluster management & monitoring, the ability to distribute Excel calculations, and the ability to harness idle Windows 7 workstations.
Windows HPC Server 2008 R2 Suite has two components:
The Windows Server 2008 R2 HPC Edition operating system. A version of the Windows Server 2008 R2 operating system designed for use in an HPC cluster. Differences between HPC Edition, Standard, and Enterprise can be reviewed at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/en/us/editions.aspx
System Requirements

# HPC Pack 2008 R2 supported Operating Systems Head nodes: x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, or HPC Edition
# Compute nodes: x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 or Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, or HPC Edition
# Broker nodes: x64-based versions of Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, or HPC Edition
# Workstation nodes: Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate

Additional notes: CPU: x64 architecture computer, except for Workstation nodes which may run x86-based or x64-based processors
RAM: 512 MB
Multiprocessor support: HPC Pack 2008 R2 can address up to 64 cores on a single machine. Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 HPC Edition and Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 Standard Edition support up to four processors per server. Windows Server 2008 and 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition supports up to eight processors per server, Windows Server 2008 R2 Datacenter Edition supports up to 64 processors per server.
Minimum disk space for setup: 50 GB
Network interface card: At least one network interface card (NIC) is required. Additional NICs may be required depending on the selected network topology
Failover Clustering: To enable failover clustered (aka High Availability or HA) head nodes or broker nodes you must use the Windows Server 2008 R2 Entereprise edition operating system.
